Biography

General Sir Arthur James Lyon Fremantle was born on November 11, 1835.

He was the son of Major General John Fremantle and Agnes Lyon.

James fremantle biography

After graduating from Sandhurst, Great Britain’s West Point, Arthur Fremantle entered the army in 1852 and soon became an officer in England’s renowned Coldstream Guards (both his father and grandfather had served with distinction in the same regiment).

In 1860, at the age of 25, Fremantle was promoted to lieutenant colonel. After meeting a Confederate officer when he held
